What We Do
Saskatchewan FCA's primary goal is to foster relationships between adoptive families in our province. We are doing this by organizing events where families can socialize and publishing a quarterly newsletter.
Events
Currently, we organize three big events in Saskatoon and three big events in Regina throughout the year. Both cities have a Chinese New Year party and both hold a summer picnic. Saskatoon also hosts an Autumn Moon Festival in September and Regina holds a Culture Camp in November.
Newsletter
Our newsletter currently runs 10 to 12 pages long, filled with articles and photos contributed by Saskatchewan FCA members, as well as items reprinted from other sources.
The Future
Other FCC chapters have organized pre-adoption information meetings, playgroups, Chinese language and culture classes for children, lectures on post-adoption topics, etc. The direction Saskatchewan FCA will take depends on the input of its members.
Let us know what is important to you, and volunteer to help if you can!
Origins
In January 2000, a group of parents founded Saskatchewan FCA to serve the China-adoptive families of our province. Saskatchewan FCA is a non-profit, volunteer organization run by adoptive parents and is independent of individual adoption agencies or facilitators.
Families with Children from China, or FCC, is a network of parent support groups. Although FCC is based in the United States, there are chapters in Toronto, Vancouver and Nova Scotia. FCC's goals are to support families who have adopted Chinese children, to support waiting families, to encourage adoption from China and to advocate for children remaining in orphanages in China.
Saskatchewan FCA is a chapter of the Adoption Support Centre of Saskatchewan, and gratefully acknowledges the receipt of a Seed Money Grant from ASCS.
Expansion
In May of 2000, it became evident that families in Saskatchewan were starting to explore adoption from Vietnam as well. Because there was no support group in place for these families, and because China-adoptive families have a lot in common with families who adopt from elsewhere in Asia, the Saskatchewan FCA board decided to expand Saskatchewan FCA to include all families who have adopted from Asia.
Such an expansion is in line with FCC guidelines and practice, which has tended to be inclusive rather than exclusive. Because there has been interest in our organization from outside the province, we welcome families from outside Saskatchewan as well.
Thus, membership in Saskatchewan FCA is now open to all families who have adopted children of Asian origin, regardless of route of adoption, religion, marital status of the family, or the child's country of birth.
